Dinner in Akehurst House was unimaginative, but probably hurriedly constructed of what had been available when they arrived in Lewes. Sir Joshua had retired to his bed, and Amanda Akehurst had announced that she found chewing painful, so around the table were Lady Akehurst, the Blairs, Mr. Lawrence and Fussy. When Lady Akehurst retired to the drawing room with Isobel, begging them not to be long, Blair found that the brandy had been placed in front of him, dropped with an awful clatter by the butler. Mr. Lawrence regarded Blair coldly, as if it were all his fault. Blair looked at the ceiling.

‘So here we are, back in Lewes,’ said Fussy, with a nervous glance at each of the older men. ‘Isn’t that nice?’

For a moment, neither responded. Then Blair cleared his throat.

‘Harvest all in?’ he asked, indistinctly, not quite looking at Mr. Lawrence.

‘As I told you in my letter,’ said Mr. Lawrence. It sounded as if he were gritting his teeth. It made Blair nervous.

‘Yes, yes of course.’ Something about corn. He knew he had read the letter very carefully at the time: it was by way of being a business report. ‘And the farm manager and his family, all keeping well?’

‘The last I heard,’ said Mr. Lawrence with precision, ‘his youngest child had a slight cough. Other than that, as far as I am aware they are in excellent health.’

‘That’s good,’ said Blair. ‘That’s very good. I’m very glad to hear it.’

Mr. Lawrence snorted.

‘You’ll be going to see Nathan Worthing, I suppose?’ asked Fussy, with the air of a man drawn to the edges of precipices. ‘Now that you’re here. In Lewes.’

The name seemed to echo around the bleak Akehurst dining room. Mr. Lawrence was poker-straight, his face just a little pink.

‘I daresay,’ he said.

‘Perhaps we should go together?’ Blair heard himself saying.

‘An excellent idea,’ said Mr. Lawrence, after a moment. ‘Yes, let us see him together. Then there will be no opportunity for – any nonsense.’

Blair sat back as Fussy shot to his feet.

‘Shall we join the ladies?’ he said, a forced smile on his face. ‘Lady Akehurst did ask us not to be too long.’
